HSIA Event Update – Halloween
Hillsmere Residents-
We were trying hard to plan a safe HSIA Halloween event for the children of Hillsmere. Many ideas were shared, including a trunk-or-treat at the beach, photo op areas around the community, etc. Ultimately, the Board decided it was too risky. Sadly, HSIA will not be hosting a Halloween event (parade or otherwise) this year. May you all have a safe and Happy Halloween!
Dumpster Days – Oct 23/24
Dumpster Days are scheduled for our community on Friday and Saturday, October 23 & 24.
Please read all of the following information carefully, as some program information has been updated and/or changed. Please note, the dumpsters will be delivered by 12:00 noon (possibly earlier) on Friday, October 23 and removed by 12:00 noon on Saturday, October 24.
****PLEASE MAKE SURE THE DUMPSTERS ARE IN PLACE BEFORE HAULING ANY ITEMS TO THE DUMPSTER AREA.****
The dumpsters will be located adjacent to the community pool. If we have a large amount of rain, dumpsters could be relocated to the beach parking lot.
- PLEASE NOTE A “METAL ONLY” CONTAINER WILL BE AVAILABLE
- PLEASE DO NOT BRING UNACCEPTABLE ITEMS TO THE DUMPSTERS
- The following items are prohibited: Junk automobiles, trailers, gas & propane tanks, tree trunks/logs, oil drums or tanks, liquids, hazardous waste, boats, tires, batteries, paint, refrigerators/air conditioners/freon items, cardboard, paper, plastic or glass.
- FAILURE TO ADHERE TO THE COUNTY RULES & GUIDELINES COULD RESULT IN DISCONTINUATION OF THIS SERVICE
- WE WILL NOT HAVE A SEPARATE DUMPSTER FOR RECYCLABLES SUCH AS CARDBOARD, PAPER, PLASTIC OR GLASS. PLEASE PUT THESE ITEMS AT YOUR CURB FOR WEEKLY RECYCLE PICK UP.
Please be courteous and follow all directions to maintain a smooth flow of traffic. We will be using a clockwise traffic pattern, the same as in previous years (see map below). To avoid excessive damage to the grounds, do not enter or exit the dumpster area from Harbor Drive.
Please follow these guidelines:
- 1. Do not bring children.
- 2. Watch for, and do not interfere with, County trucks and bulldozers in the area.
- 3. Do not leave materials outside the dumpsters or allow them to protrude above the top of the container.
- 4. Do not put too much heavy material in one container. Fill the containers completely from the rear to the front.
- 5. Tie or bundle light material so it won’t blow around. Disassemble large items such as swing sets and other similar items. Cut tree trimmings into 3-4 foot lengths.
- 6. Do not put material into the containers after dark.
- 7. Do not block flow of local traffic on Great Lake Drive.
HSIA Notice – QWP Paving Project begins 10/9/20
Hillsmere Residents,
Quiet Waters Park is beginning a paving project tomorrow, Friday, October 9. The first trail affected will be the Fitness Trail that borders the Hillsmere fenceline. During the time of paving, the trail will be closed. QWP is unsure of the length of the project, since it is weather dependent.

Volunteer to help plant native trees in Hillsmere!
Hillsmere Residents-
Hillsmere is looking for volunteers to help plant native trees and shrubs throughout the community. With support from the Chesapeake Bay Trust, Hillsmere Shores Improvement Association, Arundel Rivers Association, and Watershed Stewards Academy, we have purchased over 200 native trees and shrubs to plant on community property throughout the neighborhood. The goal of this project is to increase tree diversity and canopy coverage in Hillsmere, and provide buffers for the multiple stormwater best management practices that have been installed around the community.
Given these Covid-19 times that we are living in, the safety of all involved is our top priority. Social distancing will be maintained and family units will be grouped together to plant trees and shrubs in designated areas. A contractor will pre-dig the holes for planting, so the work load on individuals will be relatively light. Weather permitting, the plantings will take place on the last two weekends in October. The trees and shrubs will be planted at the community pool area, the community house near the pool, the beach, the kayak dock on Beach Drive, and the community boat park.

Operation Clearwater – Water Quality Report as of 9/2

This is the last week of sampling.
Four locations exhibited were not within the acceptable levels for recreational water activities. These include Hillsmere Beach, Hillsmere Marina, South River Park, and Cadle Creek Beverly. Samples were collected prior to Thursday’s heavy rain, so we predict increased bacteria levels afterwards. Anne Arundel County has a 48 hour no swimming guidance of water ways after a rain event. Rain washes pollutants from the surrounding watershed into the waterways and may increase bacteria levels of the water.
On Wednesday, September 2nd, Arundel Rivers Federation volunteers collected water samples at the locations listed on the chart. All samples were analyzed at a local laboratory. The acceptable concentration of Enterococci bacteria for swimming and other direct water contact is less than 104 (cfu) colony forming units/100ml.

Anne Arundel County has a 48 hour no swimming guidance of water ways after a rain event. Rain washes pollutants from the surrounding watershed into the waterways and may increase bacteria levels of the water.
