SRF Operation Clearwater Water Quality report as of 6/13/18

Hello!

Southdown Shores had high bacteria readings, on Wednesday, June 13th. Pine Whiff outfall and Crab Creek pre-restoration sites remain high despite the clear weather the last few days. All the other recreational sites had very low readings and the weather forecast looks good for this upcoming weekend.  Come swim and kayak with us at Mayo Beach this Sunday for South x West Rhode Fest . For more information, go to www.southriverfederation.net.

On Wednesday, June 13th, South River Federation staff collected water samples at the locations listed on the chart.  Feces from geese and dogs, as well as leaky septic tanks are the top contributors to high bacteria results. The acceptable concentration of Enterococci bacteria for swimming and other direct water contact is less than 104 (cfu) colony forming units/100ml.  Anne Arundel County has a 48 hour no swimming/recreational guidance of water ways after a rain event.

Operation Clearwater 6/3/18 Water Quality Update

Despite the torrential rains over the weekend, the sites had surprisingly low readings, except for Heritage Harbour, which had an uncharacteristically high reading at 140 cfu/100 ml. Pine Whiff remains high. Please be aware that it is forecasted to rain this weekend, which may flush more bacteria into the water.

On Wednesday, June 3rd, South River Federation staff collected water samples at the locations listed on the chart.

Have a safe and wonderful weekend,

Jesse Iliff, South Riverkeeper

Reminder – Happy Hour Friday, June 8 @ Beach!

Get Your Beach On! Come down to the beach, 5-8 PM on Friday, June 8 for hamburgers and hot dogs. Bring your family and come hang out with your neighbors.
Please bring a side dish or dessert to share (no glass dishes). Water and Kool Aid will be available. Those over 21, feel free to BYOB (again, no glass – it’s a beach!). Seating is limited so you may want to bring chairs or a picnic blanket. Burgers and dogs available 5:30-7:30, so don’t wait til the last minute.
So far, three people will be setting up. We could use more help. If you can, come to the beach at 4 or 4:30. Or, if you can help clean up, it would be appreciated. At a minimum, everyone can help by properly recycling (plate, utensils, cup) at the event.
We are looking for hosts for the next two Beach Happy Hours. East Side of the neighborhood (Edgemere, Beach, Cedar, Meade, Sunset, etc) you have been tagged to host the July 13 Beach Happy Hour. And West Side of the neighborhood (pool side – Duvall, Tayman, Pinecrest, Harbor, etc) you have the honor to host the August 10 Beach Happy Hour. All you have to do is help the committee with the shopping (turn in receipts for reimbursement), the set up (4PM day of) and the clean up (make sure recycling and trash are separate). If you want to enhance the event – pick a theme and plan some activities for the kids.
If interested, please contact HSIA (admin@hillsmereshores.net or 410-263-4456) about the July and August events. Just show up early or stay late for the June event if you are able to help out.
Thank you!
Happy Hour Committee

2018 Mosquito Control Program

Hillsmere Residents –

Please note, Hillsmere will once again participate in the Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Mosquito Control Program.  Regular surveillance and control of adult mosquitoes will take place from May 30 to October 2, anytime between 7:00 pm to 2:30 am.

  • Hillsmere’s assigned spray night is Monday.  Spraying will only ever occur on Mondays
  • Spraying for adult mosquitoes will be performed only if a Maryland Department of Agriculture Employee determines it necessary.
  • Spraying will not be conducted during rain, in wind speeds exceeding 12 mph, or temperatures above 89 degrees F.

Most residents support this program; however, if you prefer to opt-out of spraying at your property, you can elect to not participate. Please visit the MDA’s site for exemption forms and detailed information on the Mosquito Control program.

5/10/18 – HSIA General Membership Meeting – Location Change & Beach Committee Presentation

Hillsmere Residents-

Please attend HSIA’s General Membership Meeting tomorrow, 5/10 @ 7PM. Please note, the meeting has been moved from Katharine Hall to the BARN COMMONS at Key School. This is the same location that we host our annual Come And Get It Day, located off Carroll Drive (lower parking lot). Key School campus map found here.

The meeting will include a presentation of the new playground equipment proposed by the Beach Committee. The proposed new piece of equipment would be located in the enclosed sandy area near the large pavilion, next to the swings. A Mini Spacenet (link to product images & information here) will provide opportunities for children ages 2-12 to climb, balance and gather. The three-dimensional rope climbing challenherege provides development of strength and coordination with many safety protections. This Kompan product uses galvanized structural parts and steel core ropes for their unique designs. The cost for the Mini Spacenet, including delivery, installation, and additional sand, is $20,000. This expense has been part of a 2 year plan, and has been budgeted for this fiscal year. Playground equipment is expensive, but yields hours of enjoyment for our youth, as well as developing strength and critical balancing skills.

Please make an effort to attend the meeting, gather facts, and share your opinions. We want to hear from you! You may also contact Marilyn Carpenter, HSIA Board member & Beach Chair via email beach@hillsmereshores.net
